Wout Van Aert Triumphs in Paris-Roubaix Showdown Against Tadej Pogačar
Wout Van Aert secured a long-awaited triumph at Paris-Roubaix on Sunday. He outsprinted Tadej Pogačar inside the Roubaix velodrome to take the win.
Decisive move
The Belgian rider attacked with just under 55 kilometres to go. Pogačar responded and immediately dropped Mads Pedersen with a powerful surge.
Mathieu van der Poel suffered two punctures earlier. Those mechanicals kept the defending champion from joining the decisive move.
Chase and confrontation
Van der Poel led the chase for much of the final hour. He could not close the gap and rejoin the leaders.
That left Van Aert and Pogačar alone out front. Pogačar tried repeatedly to shake Van Aert but failed to create a gap.
Final kilometres and sprint
The race came down to a two-man sprint on the velodrome. Van Aert accelerated off Pogačar’s wheel and held on to the line.
He collapsed after crossing the finish. His reaction showed the emotion of a long-sought victory.
Podium and finishing order
Jasper Stuyven finished third for Soudal Quick-Step. He crossed the line two seconds ahead of Mathieu van der Poel.
Christophe Laporte placed fifth for Visma-Lease a Bike. Mike Van Dijke was sixth for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, followed by Mads Pedersen in seventh.
Reactions
Pogačar admitted the earlier chasing efforts were costly. He said those efforts left him short of freshness in the final sprint.
He also noted difficulties on the tougher sectors, including the Carrefour stretch. He still hoped for a sprint but said his legs felt weak when it mattered most.
