Miami Hotel Demolition Unleashes Dust Cloud, Closes Streets and Bridge

Swire Properties will implode the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Brickell at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. The 23-story tower and its six-story parking garage will be demolished to make way for condos and a new hotel.

Closures and schedule

Miami police will close streets and the Brickell Key Bridge ahead of the implosion. The bridge will shut to vehicles and pedestrians at 7 a.m.

  • 4:00 a.m. — Final setup of barricades and exclusion-zone signage.
  • 6:30 a.m. — Residents wanting to leave Brickell Key must do so before 7 a.m.

  • 8:15 a.m. — BG Group activates dust suppression systems.
  • 8:28 a.m. — Two five-second sirens mark the two-minute countdown.
  • 8:29 a.m. — Three one-second sirens indicate the implosion is imminent.
  • 8:30 a.m. — Implosion initiated; the structure is expected to fall in about 20 seconds.
  • Cleanup and reopening of the bridge, streets, and sidewalks expected by 1:30 p.m.

What to expect on site

Swire warns that dust, debris and vibrations are normal during an implosion. Dust is released in seconds and may linger for several minutes.

Wind speed and direction will determine how far the dust travels. Organizers say vibrations will stay below statutory limits.

Debris containment

Teams expect most debris to remain inside the building footprint. Some parking garage walls will be kept to contain debris.

Temporary barges will sit in Biscayne Bay to catch falling material. Hazardous materials were removed beforehand.

Air monitoring and suppression

Air quality monitors will be installed around the site. Dust suppression systems will operate before the implosion.

Organizers state any material reaching the water should not be harmful due to prior remediation.

Guidance for residents and businesses

Officials provided steps to reduce dust ingress. These steps aim to protect homes and local businesses.

  • Turn off all exhaust systems before the implosion.
  • Keep elevator and stairwell doors closed to avoid a chimney effect.
  • Cover ground-level intakes with geotextile fabric and secure with sandbags.
  • Cover vulnerable pools with poly sheeting, buoyed by pool balls or rafts, and seal edges with sandbags.
  • Set smoke detectors to test mode because they can mistake dust for smoke.
  • Restaurants should seal gaps and turn off hood exhaust fans.

The hotel demolition produced a dust cloud that will affect nearby streets and may briefly close the bridge. Residents should plan accordingly and follow official messages.
