Scottie Scheffler Nears Masters Record with Dynamic Third-Round Performance
Scottie Scheffler delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 Masters, showcasing his skill in the third round. He shot a remarkable 7-under 65, just two strokes shy of the Augusta National course record, held by Nick Price and Greg Norman.
Dynamic Third-Round Performance
Scheffler’s outstanding round brought him to a tie with Rory McIlroy for the best round of the tournament thus far. After struggling with a 2-over 74 in the second round, the 29-year-old bounced back energized by a solid start on Saturday.
- Eagled the par-5 second hole
- Made par on four consecutive holes
- Finished the front nine with three consecutive birdies
At the turn, Scheffler found himself in the top five, finishing the front nine with a stellar score of 31. He added another birdie on the par-4 11th hole, maintaining momentum before facing some challenges on the back nine.
Challenges on the Back Nine
On the par-5 15th hole, Scheffler’s approach went long, leading to a missed birdie putt that came just inches from the cup. Following a birdie on the par-3 16th, he had the course record within reach. However, a pair of pars closed out his round.
Reflecting on his performance, Scheffler noted, “I thought I was really, really close to an even better round.” He acknowledged that while it wasn’t his best, he executed his game plan effectively. “I did what I needed to do to give myself opportunities,” he said.
Future Prospects
Scheffler, a two-time Masters winner, entered this year’s tournament as one of the favorites. Despite his challenges, McIlroy, the defending champion, remains a tough competitor, having posted a 5-under 67 on Thursday and another 7-under 65 on Friday.
As the tournament progresses, Scheffler’s early start on Saturday allowed him to take advantage of softer course conditions. “It will continue to get firmer as the day goes on,” he observed, suggesting a strategic advantage in his performance.
Looking ahead, Scheffler aims to build on this momentum. With a previous best round of 66 achieved in 2024, he is determined to excel in the final rounds of the Masters.
