Fans Defy Weather at Aintree for Grand National Excitement
Crowds gathered at Aintree on Saturday despite a changeable forecast. Fans defied the weather as sun gave way to heavy rain and hail before the third race.
Conditions and course atmosphere
Racegoers used umbrellas, coats and handbags for shelter. Many had dressed for fashion as well as racing, prepared for sudden showers.
The Grand National was scheduled for 4pm. The third race began just before 2pm amid the worst of the showers.
Racing incidents and welfare concerns
Organisers recorded the second equine fatality of the three-day festival on Saturday. Get On George suffered a fatal injury in the William Hill Handicap Hurdle.
Animal welfare groups had urged a boycott after Gold Dancer died after winning a race on Friday. The deaths intensified debate about safety at the meeting.
The Grand National reaches a global audience. Broadcasters estimate a potential viewership of around 600 million.
Notable attendees and fashion
Celebrities were among the crowd. Former footballer Wayne Rooney attended with his wife Coleen, who wore a pale yellow dress.
Fashion remained a central draw. Designer Melissa-Kate Newitt, 27, travelled from Birkenhead and praised the event for its style.
Newitt planned to back Monty’s Star in memory of her late cat. She said she had packed a coat to cope with the variable weather.
Fans and local atmosphere
Friday’s Ladies Day drew the biggest crowd since 2012. More than 53,000 people attended that session.
Longstanding visitors added colour to the event. John Hallihan, 69, from Cork, wore a green suit with shamrocks and said he had attended for two decades.
Local supporters also spoke about the festival’s pull. Wesley Jones and his wife Becky came from Crosby. Oliver Henney arrived with more than 20 friends from Stoke-on-Trent.
Community connections
The race was shown at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for the first time. Patients watched in the MediCinema, including five-year-old Oliver Christie.
Christie recently had his fifth open-heart operation. He was named the race’s honorary 35th runner for the occasion.
