Pogačar Tackles Paris-Roubaix with 38mm Tyres, 1x Drivetrain, No Tubeless Inserts
Tadej Pogačar is set to compete in the 2026 Paris-Roubaix on a Colnago Y1RS Dark Edition bicycle. His setup features 35mm-wide Continental GP 5000 S TR tyres, which expand to 38mm when mounted on 25mm-wide ENVE SES wheels. This configuration marks Pogačar’s second use of a 1x drivetrain in a road race, following his success at Milan-San Remo earlier that same year.
Pogačar’s Unique 1x Drivetrain
The reigning World Champion has chosen a 56-tooth 1x drivetrain for the race. This choice is common among competitors at Paris-Roubaix, as it optimizes weight and aerodynamics on the challenging course. An important detail of this setup is the K-Edge chain catcher, which ensures chain retention over cobbled sectors, since Shimano does not officially support a 1x configuration with its Dura-Ace R9200 groupset.
Tyre Technology and Regulations
- Tyre Width: Pogačar’s front tyre measures 35mm, expanding to 38mm when mounted. His rear tyre, while listed at 32mm, also measures approximately 35mm when fitted.
- UCI Regulations: The setup is carefully designed to remain within UCI limits, which restrict the maximum combined diameter of wheels and tyres to 700mm.
- Tyre Clearance: This configuration nearly maximizes the clearance of the Colnago Y1RS, with minimal space between the fork and the tyre.
Race Conditions and Strategy
The weather leading up to the Paris-Roubaix is expected to be dry, favoring Pogačar’s choice of wider tyres. If wet conditions had been anticipated, a narrower tyre might have been necessary for better handling. The team opted for the more durable Continental GP 5000 S TR tyres instead of the brand’s fastest options.
Technical Modifications
Additional modifications to Pogačar’s bike include the use of 165mm long Dura-Ace R9200 cranks with a 56t Carbon-Ti chainring. The deep wheels consist of a 60mm front rim and a 56mm rear rim, enhancing aerodynamic performance.
As the race approaches, Pogačar’s setup is creating buzz, especially for the potential use of the widest tyres seen at the event. Through these thoughtful choices, Pogačar aims to tackle the challenges of Paris-Roubaix with precision and confidence.
