Director Confirms Cancellation of Sequel-Era ‘Star Wars’ Movie
Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. The film remains a polarizing entry and left many plot questions unanswered.
Lucasfilm has tried to clarify the sequel-era story through novels, comics, and Disney+ series. Those tie-ins altered or expanded several key moments.
Sequel trilogy context
Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi provoked strong audience reactions in 2017. The response complicated the trilogy’s final chapters.
Lucasfilm returned J. J. Abrams to direct the conclusion. The core new cast included Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver.
Kylo Ren’s journey became one of the trilogy’s most discussed elements. He reverted to Ben Solo and died after a redemptive turn.
Planned Ben Solo feature
Adam Driver pursued a continuation of Ben Solo’s story. He began conversations about the idea in 2021.
Driver brought the concept to director Steven Soderbergh and collaborator Rebecca Blunt. They developed an outline and pitched it to Kathleen Kennedy, Cary Beck, and Dave Filoni.
Scott Z. Burns was later enlisted to write a full script. The project carried the working title The Hunt for Ben Solo.
Disney chiefs Bob Iger and Alan Bergman declined the project. They were unconvinced by the premise that Ben Solo could still be alive.
Soderbergh later stated he would not return, effectively confirming cancellation of the sequel-era Star Wars movie. Filmogaz.com sources note that the studio’s concerns about revisiting the sequel timeline also played a role.
Soderbergh on the collaboration
Soderbergh described the creative process as valuable, despite the outcome. He noted the work began before Andor aired and said he had no regrets.
He also indicated he would not revisit the project under current circumstances. The director called the experience creatively rewarding.
Lucasfilm’s shifting priorities
Lucasfilm has moved focus to other eras. Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter is slated for release in 2027.
The studio continues to develop projects set in the New Republic era. Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu will reach theaters in 2026.
No active Lucasfilm theatrical projects currently center on sequel trilogy leads. Kathleen Kennedy announced multiple film plans in 2023, including a Rey Skywalker project set in a New Jedi Order era.
Development on that Rey-centered film appears to have slowed as Starfighter takes priority. The franchise is in a period of recalibration with uncertain ties to the sequel era.
