MSU Basketball Poised for Success, Needing Only a Strong Center

The Division I transfer portal opened at midnight Tuesday, April 7. About 1,700 players reportedly entered within the first 24 hours. Michigan State had not lost anyone from its roster as of Tuesday night.

Tom Izzo remains the Spartans’ head coach. He is a 71-year-old Hall of Famer with strong backing from donors and administrators. His reputation still helps in recruiting.

Roster outlook and remaining need

Michigan’s national title has stirred emotions among rivals. Still, Michigan State’s core appears mostly intact. The roster looks like a contender for 2026-27 if one key piece is added.

MSU Basketball Poised for Success, Needing Only a Strong Center describes the current view around East Lansing. Jeremy Fears Jr. is established as the program’s primary star. Coen Carr, Jordan Scott and Cam Ward are expected returners.

Frontcourt situation

Two centers are currently on next year’s roster. Redshirt sophomore Jesse McCulloch returns. Incoming freshman Ethan Taylor will also join the team.

Neither McCulloch nor Taylor has yet proven they can replace former interior pieces. Carson Cooper and Jaxon Kohler previously filled that role. The staff and fans want a rim-running, rim-protecting, rebounding big.

Transfer market options

The portal has several quality big men available. Some names are likely beyond Michigan State’s budget. Others could fit both need and culture.

  • Kansas: Flory Bidunga
  • Kansas: Bryson Tiller
  • Cincinnati: Moustapha Thiam
  • Louisville: Sananda Fru
  • Georgia: Somto Cyril
  • Alabama: Aiden Sherrell
  • Providence: Oswin Erhunmwunse

Aiden Sherrell stands out as a proximate target. He is 6-foot-11 and listed at 255 pounds. Last season he averaged 11.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in 24 minutes per game.

Financial and roster considerations

NIL and revenue sharing shape portal recruiting now. An estimated $21.3 million in revenue sharing will be factored in for 2026-27. Programs that play major football likely won’t allocate more than $5–7 million of that to men’s basketball.

Current players often have easier access to quasi-legitimate NIL deals. That benefits retention over adding external transfers. Bringing in a top center will still require a significant financial commitment.

Izzo’s philosophy and the plan ahead

Izzo values roster loyalty and development. He has shown reluctance to replace established players quickly. That approach made sense with much of the roster already in place.

There is precedent for building a championship roster quickly through the portal. Michigan’s recent offseason example shows that can work. Conversely, other programs have struggled when the chemistry did not align.

Now, the Spartans must finish the work. Adding one proven interior piece could convert potential into contention. Filmogaz.com will continue to track developments as the portal unfolds.
