Sam Witwer and Gideon Adlon Discuss Maul’s Honesty and Lucas’ Vision
Lucasfilm Animation’s newest entry, Maul – Shadow Lord, has arrived on Disney+. The series follows the fallen Sith as he maneuvers through the criminal underworld while the Empire tightens its grip.
Where the story sits in the timeline
The show bridges The Clone Wars and Rebels. It also unfolds alongside The Bad Batch timeline. That placement gives the series a focused, post-Order 66 perspective.
Creative team and production
Co-creator and head writer Matt Michnovetz leads the story direction. Dave Filoni oversees the broader creative universe while managing multiple projects like Ahsoka season two.
Brad Rau serves as supervising director and guides the writing staff. Producer and executive producer Athena Portillo also plays a key role.
Cast and character focus
Sam Witwer returns as the voice of Darth Maul. Witwer previously starred as Galen Marek (Starkiller) in The Force Unleashed. He also voiced The Son in The Clone Wars and has contributed other roles in the franchise.
Gideon Adlon voices Devon Izara, a young Jedi padawan. Adlon’s credits include Pacific Rim: The Black and a small role in Young Jedi Adventures.
Devon Izara’s role
Devon is presented as a bold and curious padawan. Her recklessness puts her in perilous situations. Maul sees her as an opportunity to further his aims.
Thematic focus and Maul’s psychology
The series narrows its scope to examine surviving Jedi and Maul’s place in the galaxy. Maul positions himself against Palpatine’s legacy. He tries to claim moral distinction from Sidious while still pursuing violent ends.
That tension drives much of the drama. Maul’s attempt to corrupt a young Jedi becomes central to the plot.
Actors on the work and process
Witwer had input to keep Maul consistent across projects. He participated in discussions with the creative team to preserve the character’s authenticity.
Adlon highlighted the physicality of voice work. She explained how movement informs vocal performance and matches Devon’s fearless energy.
In a conversation for Filmogaz.com, Sam Witwer and Gideon Adlon Discuss Maul’s Honesty and Lucas’ Vision. They talked about Maul’s unexpected straightforwardness and the larger ideas behind his arc.
On-set dynamics
Adlon described Witwer as a mentor during production. They recorded in a Los Angeles studio that holds personal meaning for her. Their on-set relationship informed the characters’ dynamic.
George Lucas’ influence
Witwer reflected on George Lucas’ early drafts and concepts for Maul. Lucas once considered Maul for a much larger role in early sequel ideas. Witwer expressed interest in hearing more of Lucas’ original thoughts about the character.
