What drove the disruptions

Broad spring storms combined with peak holiday travel to strain schedules. Airlines and air traffic services logged heavy knock-on effects Friday through Sunday.

Flight data showed over 15,000 delays on Thursday and Friday. Saturday added more than 5,600 delays before the Easter surge.

A partial federal shutdown contributed to operational challenges. The shutdown coincided with a two-week congressional recess.

Transportation Security Administration staffing fell by nearly 500 positions since the funding lapse began. That loss raised concerns about checkpoint capacity.

TSA employees began receiving pay again on March 30. The payment followed an order by President Donald Trump to reroute federal funds.

On Friday, the president proposed shifting airport security functions to private contractors. The plan aims to cut costs and reshape operations.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents also staffed airport checkpoints. ICE assisted at Florida hubs including RSW in Fort Myers.

Sen. Lindsey Graham drew attention after being seen at a popular Orlando attraction over the holiday weekend. The optics prompted debate during the funding impasse.

How travelers can monitor security lines

Passengers should check the MyTSA app for live security wait estimates. Third-party sites such as ifly.com, flightqueue.com and tsawaittimes.com also offer timing data.

Some third-party feeds may be less reliable during the shutdown. Ifly.com issued a notice that its pages may not be actively managed.

TSA PreCheck, family lines and military lanes typically move faster. Travelers with those privileges can expect shorter waits at many checkpoints.
