Ex-Birmingham Sportscaster Mike Raita Arrested for Office Misuse

Former TV sports figure Mike Raita was arrested in Talladega on April 2. Authorities charged him with using his official position for personal gain.

The 67-year-old ex-Birmingham sportscaster was booked locally and released the same day. He posted a $25,000 bond to secure his release.

Professional background

Raita worked as sports director at ABC 33/40 for many years. He later became executive director of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.

He led the hall of fame from 2020 until 2024. He also served as a regional director for Senator Tommy Tuberville until about two months ago.

Audit findings and alleged transactions

A state audit released in 2025 flagged multiple concerns at the IMHOF. The audit tied questionable transactions to the period of Raita’s leadership.

Vehicle purchases and repairs

The audit shows a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro convertible pace car changed hands in April 2023. The car sold for $15,000.

Records say the commission advertised the vehicle 16 months earlier as “1968 Chevrolet.” The audit found the commission paid at least $22,917 of $27,917 in repairs before the sale.

Related sale to family member

In March 2024, the audit reports Raita’s wife bought a 1998 Ford F-150 for $1,000. She was listed as the sole bidder after the commission advertised it as “1998 Ford Truck, as is.”

Other financial irregularities

The same audit alleges a former part-time accounts manager stole more than $200,000. The report prompted further review of IMHOF finances.

Official response and next steps

Governor Kay Ivey removed the hall of fame’s entire commission after the audit. She appointed a new board to oversee reforms.
