CBS Replaces Colbert’s Slot with ‘Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen’
CBS has announced a major change in its late-night programming line-up. Starting on May 22, the network will introduce “Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen” to fill the 11:35 p.m. slot. This change follows the conclusion of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which ends on May 21.
New Programming Highlights
The new addition, “Comics Unleashed,” is a half-hour show. CBS plans to air two episodes consecutively each night to fill the hour. Following this, the 12:35 a.m. slot will feature “Funny You Should Ask,” a game show also created by Byron Allen and hosted by Jon Kelley.
Background of ‘Comics Unleashed’
- Previous Time Slot: “Comics Unleashed” previously aired at 12:35 a.m. since September last year.
- Replacement: It took over after CBS canceled “After Midnight.”
Byron Allen, comedian and CEO of Allen Media Group, expressed gratitude towards CBS in a recent statement. He emphasized the importance of humor, stating, “the world can never have enough laughter.” Currently, CBS has a time-buy agreement with Allen Media Group for the 2026-27 television season. This means Allen’s organization finances the airing of its shows on CBS.
Reasons Behind Programming Changes
This programming shift takes place less than a year after CBS announced the end of Colbert’s time on air. The network indicated that financial pressures within late-night television influenced their decision. The choice was termed “agonizing” for CBS executives.
Some experts believe political factors may have played a role in this cancellation. Colbert has often been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump. CBS’ parent company, Paramount, was in the process of seeking approval from the Trump administration for its sale to Skydance at that time. Additionally, CBS settled a lawsuit related to Trump just weeks before the cancellation.
Byron Allen has openly expressed interest in Colbert’s late-night slot. He mentioned at New York Ad Week, “If they’re looking for a show, my hand is already up.” With this new lineup, CBS aims to attract viewers looking for comedic entertainment during its late-night schedule.
