Rescued Manatee Melby to Be Released After SeaWorld Recovery

Melby, the rescued manatee, will return to Florida waters after months of rehabilitation at SeaWorld. Officials say the release is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Ballard Park in Melbourne, and the public is welcome to attend.

How Melby was rescued

Rescuers found Melby on Feb. 8 inside a stormwater drain beneath a Melbourne Beach road. He was trapped in a baffle box, a debris-collection section of the drain.

Crews from local, state and federal agencies worked for hours to reach him. They cut through concrete and several feet of dirt to free the animal.

Why he entered the drain

Officials believe Melby swam into the drain during a cold snap. He likely sought a warmer spot in the drainage system.

SeaWorld rehabilitation

SeaWorld Orlando took Melby for medical care and recovery after the rescue. Staff reported he moved on his own and showed interest in food upon arrival.

Melby is a sub-adult male. He weighed just over 400 pounds at rescue and gained more than 40 pounds during rehabilitation.

Community involvement and fundraising

Melby’s story drew local attention and supporters visited during his recovery. Town officials and members of the Rotary Club of Melbourne Beach checked on him on March 25.

The Rotary Club launched a GoFundMe called “Bring Melby Home.” The campaign set a goal of $16,000 to cover rescue, recovery and release costs. Funds will also support protective measures to prevent other manatees from getting trapped in stormwater systems.

Environmental focus

Organizers say the effort extends beyond one animal. They emphasize steps to protect the Indian River Lagoon and its wildlife.
