“Super Mario Galaxy Movie Thrills in Global Box Office Debut”
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has made a remarkable entrance into the global box office, achieving a staggering $372.5 million in its debut weekend. This includes an impressive $182.4 million from international markets, which solidifies its status as the biggest worldwide opening of the year.
Box Office Records and Comparisons
This debut eclipses the previously held record by Amazon MGM’s space film, Project Hail Mary, which managed $33.1 million internationally and $97.2 million overall in March. The start of Super Mario Galaxy closely mirrors its predecessor, the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which launched with $171 million overseas and $375 million globally during its opening.
Franchise Success
According to Universal, Super Mario is the only animated franchise to see two films surpass $350 million in global openings. Furthermore, Super Mario Galaxy ranks as Hollywood’s fourth-largest animated launch, following Zootopia 2, Moana 2, and the Super Mario Bros. Movie. It is also Universal’s fifth-largest global debut.
Production and Market Performance
Produced at a cost of $110 million, Super Mario Galaxy opened in 80 international markets. Key territories included:
- Mexico: $29 million
- United Kingdom and Ireland: $19.7 million
- Germany: $15 million
- France: $12 million
IMAX screenings contributed significantly, raking in $22.2 million and becoming the second-best global opening for a Hollywood release in this format. This surpassed the Super Mario Bros. Movie’s IMAX debut, which earned $21.4 million.
Competition and Future Releases
Project Hail Mary remains a strong contender, grossing $73.6 million in IMAX to date, with an overall total of $420.7 million worldwide, reflecting a 23% decline from the previous weekend. This success marks Amazon MGM’s first major box office hit following the setbacks of Melania and Crime 101.
Both Super Mario Galaxy and Project Hail Mary are expected to lead box office sales throughout April until Lionsgate’s biopic, Michael, about the King of Pop, is released at the month’s end.
