Spirit Airlines Passenger Faces Charges for In-flight Indecent Exposure
A Houston-area traveler was taken into custody after federal prosecutors said he exposed himself on a commercial flight to South Florida. The incident occurred on a Spirit Airlines flight that landed in Fort Lauderdale on February 5.
Charges and court schedule
The man, identified as 32-year-old Christopher Danielle Johnson, was arrested after Spirit flight NK1304 arrived from George Bush Intercontinental Airport. A bill of information filed March 24 alleges he intentionally committed indecent and obscene exposure of his genitalia during the roughly 2.5-hour flight.
Johnson was initially booked on a state charge for exposure of sexual organs, first offense. Federal prosecutors later charged him with committing a lewd, indecent, or obscene act within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States. That misdemeanor can carry up to 90 days in jail and a $5,000 fine.
Johnson is scheduled for an initial appearance in Fort Lauderdale federal court on April 9. Court records provide few details about the alleged conduct. He has no attorney listed on the docket and could not be reached for comment.
Airline response
A Spirit spokesperson told Filmogaz.com the passenger is banned from future travel on the carrier. The airline said it does not tolerate disruptive behavior and referred further inquiries to law enforcement.
Authorities stress that in-flight misconduct can have additional consequences. Misbehavior may affect TSA PreCheck enrollment and can land individuals on airline no-fly lists.
Context and related incidents
Federal agencies, including the FBI, handle criminal incidents that occur aboard aircraft in U.S. airspace. The Federal Aviation Administration recorded an all-time high of such incidents in 2021.
Last year, 1,621 unruly-passenger reports were referred to the FAA. So far in 2026, the agency has received 374 reports.
- Last year, Spirit permanently banned a 65-year-old registered sex offender after his arrest for allegedly groping a teenage passenger on a flight from Indianapolis to Orlando.
- In 2020, a passenger on a Spirit flight from Atlanta to Detroit was accused of slipping his hand into a sleeping woman’s pants while the plane was landing.
- In 2017, a man on a Spirit flight from Las Vegas to Oakland stripped and urinated in the aisle. He was removed and given medical attention.
- Other carriers have seen similar episodes. In 2022, a Southwest passenger on a Seattle-to-Phoenix flight was booked on federal charges after alleged repeated masturbations during the trip.
- In July 2024, an American Eagle flight diverted to Buffalo after a passenger removed his clothes and urinated in the aisle; that person was arrested on arrival.
- Last week, a JetBlue patron in Mint Class was reported to cabin crew for alleged in-flight self-pleasure and received an official warning.
The recent case highlights ongoing concerns about unruly behavior in the skies. Authorities and carriers continue to respond with arrests, bans, and federal referrals when incidents occur.
