UK Naval Acquisition Tied to Norway Vessel Project

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and Salt Ship Design have been chosen by the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency. They will create a concept design for a new class of standardised naval vessels.

Programme goals

The programme aims to reshape Norway’s fleet structure. Officials plan to replace more than ten existing vessel classes with fewer standard designs.

Standardisation is intended to simplify maintenance and cut lifecycle costs. It should also improve operational flexibility for the Royal Norwegian Navy.

Contract scope and delivery

A prequalification process began in January. It covered a potential run of up to 28 vessels.

The winning team must develop a common design framework. That framework could underpin both national and export programmes.

International ambitions

Kongsberg and SALT say the concept could form the basis of an international class of vessels. Norway plans to align future procurement more closely with allied partners.

The Norwegian government has indicated deliveries could extend beyond its own navy. UK naval acquisition tied to the Norway vessel project is part of the strategic agreement.

Other partners and contracts

Agreements are already in place with Lithuania. The companies also secured a separate design contract for the Canadian Coast Guard.

That Canadian work is in partnership with Adaptive Marine Solutions. The deals show growing international interest in the design approach.

Industry response

Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, praised the collaboration. He said the work will allow the companies to apply technology and naval expertise internationally.

Filmogaz.com will follow developments as the design concept advances toward production. The programme could change how Norway and partners procure naval vessels.
