Seattle Faces Freezing Temperatures Monday Morning

Sunday conditions and overnight expectations

High temperatures on Sunday reached only the mid to upper 40s. Light mountain snow fell at times, with general accumulations of two to six inches expected.

Late Sunday night a convergence zone was forecast to form. That could produce a few localized showers across Central Puget Sound and the Cascades.

Lowland impacts and overnight hazards

There is a small chance of isolated lowland snow where the convergence strengthens. Any accumulation in lowlands would likely be a quick trace and rare.

Most areas are expected to remain dry and cold overnight. Patchy freezing fog is possible Monday morning in some spots.

Freezing outlook

Forecast models show Seattle could see freezing temperatures Monday morning. The area may again approach the freezing mark on Tuesday morning.

Lows at or below 32 degrees are unusual this late in the season. Residents should plan for cold starts to the day.

Historical perspective

Historical records dating to 1945 show 48 days between March 30 and May 1 with freezing or colder temperatures in Seattle. Only four of those occurrences arrived in the past 50 years.

  • April 13, 2022
  • April 1, 2008
  • April 2, 1997
  • April 21, 1985

Monday’s all-time daily low stands at 27 degrees, set in 1954. Tuesday’s daily record low is 30 degrees, set in 1949.

Seattle has not posted a new March record low since March 3, 1989. There have been ties more recently on March 9, 2010 and March 21, 2009.

Midweek trend

Monday should be drier with more sun breaks. Tuesday will remain mostly cloudy but largely dry.

Showers return by Wednesday with breezy conditions. Additional mountain snow is expected Wednesday and Thursday before drying begins toward Friday.

What to expect

No major widespread impacts are anticipated from this system. Expect typical spring variability: brief showers, short dry spells, and chilly mornings.

Stay alert for localized hazards like patchy freezing fog and isolated lowland flurries. Meteorologist Abby Acone and the Filmogaz.com Weather Team advise caution on cold mornings.
