Jose Ramirez Shines in Guardians’ Highlights: This Week in Baseball

The Guardians opened the season in Seattle with a memorable debut and crucial late plays. Rookie Chase DeLauter homered in his first official major-league at-bat and again in his final plate appearance of the game.

Game-changing defense and clutch hit

In the sixth inning, Jose Ramirez ran from third to left field to catch a soft fly by Luke Raley. The play stopped a potential go-ahead rally and ended the inning.

Ramirez then delivered in the seventh. He doubled home Brayan Rocchio and DeLauter to break a 3-3 tie. The Guardians held on for a 6-4 victory.

Manager Stephen Vogt praised Ramirez for his timely play and steady presence. In the Guardians’ highlights this week in baseball, Jose Ramirez shines with both defense and offense.

Brotherly silence at T-Mobile Park

Catcher Bo Naylor said he has not spoken to his older brother Josh during the first two games. The pair have stayed quiet on the field during the four-game set in Seattle.

Bo reached base three times in those two games while Josh played first base for Seattle. The brothers played together in Cleveland from 2022 through 2024.

Josh was traded to Arizona in December 2024 and moved to Seattle in 2025. Off the field, they text and speak often, Bo added.

Hoskins accepts blame after baserunning play

In Friday’s 5-1 loss, Rhys Hoskins was thrown out at the plate to end a fifth-inning chance. Steven Kwan hit a shallow fly to left field, and Randy Arozarena made the throw.

The bases had been loaded with one out and the Guardians trailed 3-1. Hoskins said he misheard third-base coach Rouglas Odor and took responsibility.

The veteran’s candid response served as an example for a young roster. He called the error a mistake and moved on.

Roberto Perez announces retirement

Roberto Perez, 37, has retired from baseball. He had not played in the majors since 2023.

Drafted in 2006, Perez was Cleveland’s primary catcher from 2014 to 2021. He won Gold Gloves in 2019 and 2020 for his defense.

Perez recorded no passed balls in 118 games during 2019. In 2016, he did not allow a wild pitch across 61 games. Catching coach Sandy Alomar highlighted Perez’s leadership behind the plate during the 2016 playoffs and World Series run.

New dugout rituals

The Guardians introduced a Medieval helmet celebration for home runs. Players don the helmet in the dugout after homers.

Catchers now select a game star, who receives an unsharpened sword after the game. Vogt said he approves if the helmet stays off the field and the sword is presented postgame.
