Paul Heyman Criticizes WWE’s ECW Reboot as Abhorrent and Miserable
Paul Heyman spoke with Filmogaz.com’s Chris Scullion to promote WWE 2K26. The conversation covered his place among great mic workers and potential managerial pairings.
On the 2006 ECW Relaunch
Heyman criticized WWE’s 2006 ECW relaunch as an “abhorrent” and “miserable” experience for those involved. He argued the reboot lost the raw edge that defined the original promotion.
He said fans chanting ECW today are thinking of the original run. Heyman pointed to the period from September 1993 to January 2001 as the era fans revere.
Why Heyman Rejected the Relaunch
Heyman noted the 2006 return began under his oversight. Early elements echoed the original product, he said.
Over time, the brand was smoothed to match other WWE programming. That shift prompted him to leave WWE in December 2006.
Legacy and WWE 2K26
Heyman praised WWE 2K26 for including the 1994 Hardcore Heaven pay-per-view. He called that inclusion an honor for everyone who worked the show.
The game’s portrayal of the event felt genuine to him. Heyman said the original ECW revolutionized the wrestling business.
Aftermath and Return
The brand ran under WWE until it became defunct in 2010. Heyman did not return to an active role until after that end.
His comments underline the gap between the independent-era ECW and the later corporate relaunch. Fans and historians still debate which version best represents the legacy.
