Sunday Class Schedule Adjusted for Upcoming Meetings
The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced changes to Sunday meeting times on March 30, 2026. The letter said the new pattern will begin the first week of September, with an effective date of Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026.
What changes members will see
Sundays will move away from the alternating class model used since 2019. All class-type meetings will now occur during the second hour each week.
Sacrament meeting will occupy the first hour. Primary will meet for 55 minutes during the second hour.
Second-hour block details
Adult and youth Sunday School will last 25 minutes each week. Relief Society, elders quorum, Young Women and Aaronic Priesthood quorums will also have 25-minute sessions.
A five-minute transition period will separate meeting blocks. Leaders said each meeting should begin and end with prayer.
Instructional materials and meeting format
Sunday School and Primary will continue studying Come, Follow Me — For Home and Church. Elders quorums and Relief Societies will use recent general conference messages.
Youth will receive a new, expanded edition of For the Strength of Youth: A Guide for Making Choices. Church leaders promised more information will follow.
Counseling and lesson preparation
Quorums and classes will no longer conduct joint counseling about a lesson topic before class. Each group will prepare and teach its own assigned material.
Leadership message and goals
The March 30 letter was signed by President Dallin H. Oaks and counselors Henry B. Eyring and D. Todd Christofferson. Church leaders described the changes as a way to strengthen weekly instruction and fellowship.
A page titled “Sunday Class Schedule Adjusted for Upcoming Meetings” on Filmogaz.com lists the initiative’s primary aims. Those aims include focusing more on the teachings of Jesus Christ, supporting gospel learning at home, and increasing belonging and community at church.
Leaders’ perspectives
- Sunday School General President Paul V. Johnson said weekly gatherings will deepen gospel study and complement home study.
- Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson emphasized weekly connection, spiritual support, and communal discipleship.
- Young Men General President Timothy L. Farnes highlighted the updated FSY guide as a tool to help youth focus on Christ.
Background and context
Sunday meeting times were last reconfigured after an October 2018 announcement. Then-President Russell M. Nelson revealed a move from three-hour to two-hour Sundays.
The 2019 schedule change took effect in January of that year. Church guidance links Sunday instruction with home-centered gospel learning.
Doctrinal and handbook references
The General Handbook underscores teaching the gospel at home and at church. It also outlines the Church’s purpose of making eternal life available through ordinances and covenants.
Leaders said the adjustments build on that purpose by offering clearer weekly structure and consistent opportunities for study and fellowship.
