Edwards, Latson, and Okot Earn Academic All-District Honors

Columbia, S.C. — For the first time in program history, three South Carolina women’s basketball players have been honored. Edwards, Latson, and Okot earn Academic All-District honors, as announced by College Sports Communicators.

The Academic All-District award requires at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA. Players must be at least sophomores and meet playing-time criteria.

Joyce Edwards

Edwards is an environmental science major and a member of the Honors College. She earned unanimous Second-Team All-American and First-Team All-SEC recognition this season.

She is also a finalist for the Katrina McClain Award. Edwards leads the Gamecocks at 19.9 points per game.

Her scoring ranks 19th nationally. Her field goal percentage of 59.5 ranks 15th in the country.

Edwards posted 21 games of at least 20 points. Her 717 points this season are fourth most in program history.

She averaged a career-best 6.4 rebounds per game. That mark ranks 16th in the SEC.

Ta’Niya Latson

Latson is a services management major and an All-SEC Second Team selection. She also earned All-America Honorable Mention honors.

She averages 14.3 points per game, the team’s second-leading scorer. That scoring mark ranks 16th in the SEC.

Latson shoots 49.5 percent from the field, eighth in the league. She averages 3.6 assists per game, 14th in the SEC.

Her 2.22 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks 21st nationally. She has been a steady playmaker for the team.

Madina Okot

Okot is also a services management major and an All-SEC Second Team pick. She is a finalist for the Lisa Leslie Center of the Year Award.

She ranks third nationally with 22 double-doubles this season. That total is fifth in program history.

Okot leads the SEC with 10.9 rebounds per game, 11th nationally. She averages 3.8 offensive rebounds, 22nd in the country.

She scores 13.5 points per game and shoots 58.4 percent from the field. Her efficiency ranks 18th nationally.

Team status and upcoming game

No. 4/4 South Carolina advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 after Monday’s win over Southern Cal. The Gamecocks are the top seed in the Sacramento 4 Region.

South Carolina will face SEC rival Oklahoma on Saturday, March 28. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. ET on ESPN.
