DeSantis Renames Palm Beach Airport in Honor of Donald Trump
Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed House Bill 919, clearing the way to rename Palm Beach International Airport after Donald J. Trump. The measure gives the state authority to name major commercial service airports. Supporters framed the move as an honor for the president and Florida resident.
Legislative path
The proposal was introduced in January. The Florida Senate approved the bill on a 25-11 party-line vote.
Lawmakers rejected several amendments. Those included delaying the change until after Trump leaves office, requiring a local referendum, and banning financial ties to rebranding.
Support, opposition and controversy
Backers cited Trump’s ties to Palm Beach County and his Mar-a-Lago residence. In January, a portion of Southern Boulevard was renamed President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.
In February, the Trump Organization filed trademarks related to the potential airport name. Democrats called the effort unprecedented and noted an estimated $5.5 million taxpayer cost.
Critics warned the renaming could enable private financial gain through branded merchandise and related deals. Republicans described the change as recognition for a sitting president and state resident.
Official designation and next steps
The bill designates the facility as “Donald J. Trump International Airport” if final approvals are secured. Federal Aviation Administration approval is still required.
If the FAA agrees, state records must display the new name beginning July 1. The airport’s three-letter code, PBI, will remain unchanged during the transition.
Coverage and public response
The decision concludes months of debate in Tallahassee and drew national attention. Local and national outlets covered the developments as the measure moved through the Legislature.
