Police Extend Interrogation of Suspect in Derby Pedestrian Collision
Police have been granted extra time to question a man arrested after a vehicle struck pedestrians outside a pub in Derby city centre. The force said detectives will continue their inquiries until Tuesday evening.
Arrest and charges
The suspect is a 36-year-old man. He was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder and several driving offences.
Charges being considered include causing serious injury by dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving. Officers arrested him seven minutes after the collision.
Where and when it happened
The crash occurred on Friar Gate at about 9.30pm on Saturday. The vehicle involved was a black Suzuki Swift parked near a city centre pub.
Police stopped the car on Station Approach, near the bridge that leads toward Pride Park stadium. Derby’s lead officer on the case is Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred.
Suspect background
Detectives say the man lives in Derby and has been in the UK for several years. He is originally from India.
Victims and injuries
Seven people were taken to hospital following the incident. They included four men and three women aged between 36 and 52.
All suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Three patients have since been discharged from hospital.
Investigation details
Counter-terrorism officers are assisting with the probe. Police stressed their involvement reflects standard procedure for this type of case.
Detectives have not ruled on a motive. They describe the incident as isolated and say there is no wider risk to the public.
