Activist Alleges Government Failure in US Military’s Use of Shannon Airport
Three 23-year-olds face charges after an incident at Shannon Airport on November 22. The trio are accused of entering the apron and Taxi 11 area. They allegedly caused a temporary airport closure.
Arrests and charges
The defendants are Emily Cathcart, Kaspar Aiden Cantwell Strattra, and Conán Kavanagh. Each faces a charge under Section 47 of the Air Navigation and Transport (Amendment) Act.
The new charge replaces an earlier trespass allegation. The Director of Public Prosecutions has ordered the case to go forward on indictment.
Defendants’ details
All three are 23 years old. Cathcart lives in Balbriggan, Co Dublin. Strattra is from Trim, Co Meath, and Kavanagh has addresses in Dublin and Cork.
Statements and motives
At the time of arrest, one activist told gardai the State was complicit by allowing US troop transit through the airport. The comment suggested a failure by the government to prevent alleged atrocities linked to military movements.
Another defendant said he acted as a peace officer, invoking the Irish constitution and the Genocide Convention. A third expressed solidarity for Palestine.
Damage, disruption and security response
Authorities say a US Navy Reserve Boeing 737-700 suffered green paint damage. The paint was applied from a modified fire extinguisher on a van in a taxi area.
An airport vehicle barrier was also damaged. The runway area closed for roughly 30 minutes, and one incoming plane was held in a holding pattern.
Defence Forces personnel safeguarding the US aircraft briefly drew their weapons. Gardaí described the weapons being displayed until the scene was secured.
Court process and next steps
The matter proceeded before Ennis District Court. A Book of Evidence will be prepared for the circuit court indictment.
The three were granted bail after independent sureties were posted by their parents. Judge Valerie Corcoran remanded them on bail to May 6 for further procedures.

The DPP directed the case to move to Ennis Circuit Court. Prosecutors must file the Book of Evidence ahead of the indictment hearing.
