Parents Capture Fatal School Bus Collision on Dashcam During Field Trip
A Kenwood Middle School bus collided with a Tennessee Department of Transportation dump truck and another vehicle. The crash happened on Highway 70 in Carroll County, Tennessee. Students were traveling to the Greenpower USA Toyota Hub City Grand Prix that day.
Collision and casualties
More than 20 students and four teachers were aboard the Montgomery County bus. Two students died from injuries sustained in the crash. Several others suffered serious wounds.
Eyewitness accounts and dashcam
Parents Xaviel and Rosalee Lugo were following the bus when the collision occurred. They said they recorded the impact while driving behind the vehicle. Parents captured the fatal school bus collision on dashcam while following the bus on the field trip.
The Lugos described a loud crash and a sudden fireball. Their daughter, eighth-grader Xelani, had been excited to race an electric car her class built.
Scene inside the bus
Students report chaos and panic after the collision. Xelani said passengers in the rear initially thought the crash was minor. She then saw injured classmates and blood on the bus floor.
One teacher, identified as Mr. Winn, helped evacuate children despite his own injuries. Witnesses say he refused to exit before ensuring students were safe.
Medical response
Xelani and several classmates were airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital. She received treatment for a head injury and was released late Friday night. Other students remained under medical care.
Official response and investigation
Montgomery County officials extended condolences to grieving families. Commissioner David Shelton urged the community to support those affected.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash. Authorities say the inquiry remains ongoing.
