Stockport Roundabout Reopens After Year-Long Closure
A Stockport roundabout has reopened following a year-long closure. The Greek Street roundabout sits above the West Coast Main Line. It is a key thoroughfare through the town.
Bridge replacement
Network Rail led a £20 million project to replace Greek Street bridge. The previous structure was 67 years old. It was removed in August.
The replacement bridge was assembled from 51 structural elements. Cranes lifted those sections into place during a 21-day railway closure. Engineers say the new structure will protect road and rail for 120 years.
Restoration and utilities
Work to reinstate the carriageway has continued since the bridge installation. Teams also replaced buried utilities, including drainage and power cables. Gas and water mains were restored.
Local reaction and significance
Patrick Vallely of Network Rail called the replacement a major civil engineering achievement. He thanked residents and road users for their patience during the works.
Councillor Mark Roberts described the reopening as an important moment for Stockport. He said the project finished on time and supports wider transport plans. He highlighted benefits for connectivity and links with Metrolink.
Impact on travel
Greek Street roundabout is a significant linking road through Stockport. Its reopening restores a key route for drivers and public transport.
