Blue Jays Cut Macko, Bastardo, Rodriguez, Alcala from Opening Day Roster

Filmogaz.com reports the Toronto Blue Jays informed four relievers they did not make the opening-day roster. The move came as Grapefruit League play wrapped up.

Bullpen decisions and roster moves

Team officials said the final bullpen spot is between Spencer Miles and Chase Lee. That situation ruled Adam Macko out of the mix.

Broadcaster Davis Schneider said Tommy Nance has made the club during the 14-1 win over Tampa Bay. The final position-player job is now between Davis Schneider and Leo Jimenez.

Bastardo’s status

Bastardo was Toronto’s Rule 5 selection in 2025. The club must offer him back to Boston or try to acquire his full rights by trade.

He is 23 and missed the entire 2025 season after Tommy John surgery. This spring he appeared in seven games, posting a 4.70 ERA with five strikeouts and seven walks.

Rodriguez recent history

Rodriguez was outrighted off Toronto’s 40-man roster in December. The move left him outside the bullpen picture entering 2026.

He threw three innings in spring training and allowed seven runs. Rodriguez spent part of March pitching for Cuba at the World Baseball Classic and logged a 3.08 ERA over 73 innings in 2025.

Alcala and Macko details

Alcala arrived on a minor-league deal with a spring invitation. He allowed seven runs in 7.1 innings this spring.

Macko is a 25-year-old lefty who pitched for Canada at the World Baseball Classic. He threw 2.1 shutout innings in three appearances, allowing three hits and striking out four.

Macko was part of the trade that sent Teoscar Hernandez to Seattle in November 2022.

The headline ‘Blue Jays Cut Macko’ circulated after the club’s announcement. Fans also debated Alcala from Opening Day Roster and the status of Bastardo and Rodriguez.

The club must now decide whether to offer Bastardo back to Boston. Further roster moves should come before the regular season begins.
