Anxiety Claimant Found Ziplining, Surfing in Mexico: Fraud Exposed

Catherine Wieland, 33, has been ordered to repay £23,662 after admitting benefit fraud. She lived in Goring-by-Sea, West Sussex.

How investigators uncovered the fraud

The Department for Work and Pensions reviewed her bank records and travel evidence. Investigators found proof of trips and foreign spending.

Records included surfing in Cancún and ziplining activities in Mexico. She also visited Thorpe Park three times while claiming to be housebound.

Patterns of spending and behaviour

The DWP said she booked 76 beauty treatments and visited 60 pubs, clubs, and restaurants. Payments were made for tanning, manicures, and private dental care on Harley Street.

She spent money in other currencies and submitted a review saying her condition had worsened after a luxury trip. Confronted with statements, she said: “I didn’t realise you’re not allowed to leave your house.”
