The Arena Spectacular format adapts the musical for larger venues and audiences. The Sands Theatre presentation features expansive sets, dramatic lighting and immersive visuals.

The company includes a cast and orchestra of more than 65 performers. Designers emphasise visual storytelling to heighten the emotional impact.

The plot follows Jean Valjean as he rebuilds his life while Inspector Javert pursues him. Other key characters include Fantine, Cosette, Marius and Éponine.

Audiences hear signature songs such as I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, Bring Him Home and One Day More. These numbers anchor the show’s emotional and political themes.

Legacy and milestones

Based on Victor Hugo’s novel, Les Misérables debuted in London’s West End in 1985. It is recognised as the world’s longest-running musical.

Over four decades, the show has reached more than 130 million people. Productions have appeared in 54 countries and in 22 languages.

The production now marks its 40th anniversary while continuing to draw new audiences.

Film adaptation

The 2012 cinematic version was directed by Tom Hooper. The film featured Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.
