Sony Teases Future Frame Generation for PlayStation
Sony has activated an upgraded PSSR system, known as PSSR 2.0, on PlayStation 5 Pro units. The enhancement arrived with the launch of Resident Evil. It unlocked extra AI capabilities in the PS5 Pro APU.
Company comments and timeline
Lead architect Mark Cerny discussed future ML and AI features with Filmogaz.com. He said PlayStation hardware seems headed toward PC-like machine learning advances. Frame generation was highlighted as a likely next step.
Cerny indicated Sony will not add frame generation to consoles in 2026. He noted there are no further releases planned for the year.
FSR Frame Generation prospects
FSR Frame Generation is described as co-developed technology. An equivalent frame-generation library is expected on PlayStation platforms at some point.
Observers speculate Sony might unveil this tech alongside next-generation hardware. The PlayStation successor is currently targeted for 2027–2028. A limited version could be offered for the PS5.
Possible upgrades for PS5 Pro
Because FSR Redstone was developed in partnership with Sony, a PS5 Pro update remains feasible. Such an update could bring some frame-generation features to current hardware.
Community tests and hardware limits
Modders have run FSR 4 Redstone frame generation on RDNA 3 GPUs. This suggests the technique can work beyond its original targets.
Porting the tech to the PS5’s RDNA 2 APU may be possible. However, it would likely incur a higher performance penalty on that silicon.
Implications for gamers
Frame generation could boost perceived frame rates and smoothness. That said, Sony’s timeline keeps wider availability uncertain.
For now, PS5 Pro owners benefit from PSSR 2.0 and improved AI features. The broader rollout of frame generation awaits future announcements.
