Wayne County’s I-94 to Close Saturday Morning: Expect Delays

Travelers heading to Detroit Metropolitan Airport should prepare for brief traffic stops on I-94 Saturday morning. The Michigan Department of Transportation says work will require intermittent halts in traffic between 7 and 9 a.m.

Planned closures and locations

Westbound I-94 will be affected from Merriman Road to Vining Road. Eastbound I-94 will see stops from Wayne Road to Vining Road.

Traffic will be held for short, intermittent periods. Each stoppage is expected to last about 15 minutes.

Why traffic will stop

Crews must move utility lines across the freeway. Michigan State Police will assist with traffic control during the operation.

The work is part of ongoing improvements along a 12.7-mile stretch of I-94. That segment runs between Romulus and Dearborn.

Broader travel impacts

Drivers in Wayne County should expect delays during the closures. High travel volumes around spring break could lengthen wait times.

The partial government shutdown that began on Feb. 14, 2026, may also affect airport operations. Some Transportation Security Administration employees are working without pay while Congress considers the Department of Homeland Security budget.

How to check conditions

Motorists can monitor real-time conditions on MDOT’s Mi-Drive map. The map lists delays, closures, and construction alerts for I-94.
