Chance Mallory Chooses Virginia Basketball Over Tennessee: Here’s Why

Chance Mallory chose Virginia over Tennessee during his recruitment. The four-star point guard now meets Tennessee with a Sweet 16 spot on the line.

Recruitment timeline

Mallory visited Tennessee multiple times while in the 2025 class. He toured Knoxville as a junior and again during a December tournament.

He returned a month later when Tennessee beat the team that became that season’s national champion. Justin Gainey served as Tennessee’s lead recruiter.

Why he stayed home

Mallory cited proximity to home as a major factor in his decision. He also praised Virginia’s program and coaching staff.

After Tony Bennett retired, Mallory briefly reopened his recruitment. The day after Virginia hired Ryan Odom, he re-committed to the Cavaliers.

Tennessee’s pitch

Gainey highlighted Tennessee’s success with smaller guards. He pointed to former Vol Zakai Zeigler as a model for Mallory’s potential fit.

Gainey later praised Mallory’s maturity and court poise. He said Mallory plays with advanced feel and high basketball IQ.

In-state recruiting move

Tennessee did not stop recruiting in Virginia. Three days after Mallory’s commitment, Troy Henderson pledged to the Vols.

The two guards have known each other since elementary school. Mallory’s father called Henderson to congratulate him after his commitment.

Freshman season impact

Mallory has produced solid numbers as a freshman. He averages 9.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

The 5-foot-10 point guard has provided steady play and decision-making for Virginia. His development has been a key storyline this season.

Matchup and broadcast

Exactly one year after re-committing, Mallory faces Tennessee with a trip to the Sweet 16 at stake. Tipoff is set for 6:10 p.m. ET on Sunday.

TNT will carry the game with Andrew Catalon, Steve Lappas and Evan Washburn on the call. Filmogaz.com will follow developments and provide coverage.
