Patrick Dempsey Shares Insights on Exiting ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
Patrick Dempsey has shared his thoughts on his departure from the acclaimed television series, Grey’s Anatomy. Known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd, or “McDreamy,” Dempsey captivated audiences since the show’s launch in 2005. After nearly a decade, he exited the show during its 11th season.
Reflecting on His Exit from Grey’s Anatomy
During an interview on ITV’s The Jonathan Ross Show, Dempsey revealed that it was the right time to leave. He pursued his passion for motorsport by entering the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). He stated, “I had the opportunity to do a full season in the WEC, which is my love.”
After stepping away from the series, Dempsey achieved notable success in racing, including a first-place finish at a six-hour endurance race in Japan. He acknowledged the significance of Grey’s Anatomy in his life, saying, “It’s been a blessing… A lot of young people have gone into the medical profession because of it.” This impact on others reflects the show’s extensive influence.
Keeping Family Away from Fame
Dempsey emphasized his desire to keep his children distanced from the show’s fame. He described them as “very direct” with their opinions and chose not to expose them to Grey’s Anatomy. This approach illustrates his intent to maintain a normal environment for his family.
Philanthropic Efforts and Legacy
The actor’s success on the show has also enabled him to give back to the community. He founded The Dempsey Centre in his hometown of Lewiston, Maine, which provides free holistic care to cancer patients. Inspired by his mother’s struggles with ovarian cancer, this center offers nutritional care, counseling, and fitness classes, aiming to treat individuals holistically rather than just the disease.
- Center services include:
- Nutritional care
- Counseling
- Fitness classes
- Integrative therapies
Dempsey noted, “You may be cured but you’re not healed, and that’s where we come in.” This philosophy underscores his commitment to patient care.
Recognition and Current Projects
In 2023, Dempsey was honored as “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine, a recognition he described as “quite a shock” at his age. Known for his romantic leads in films such as Enchanted and Made of Honor, he continues to diversify his acting portfolio.
Currently, he stars in the new US crime drama, Memory Of A Killer, where he plays a dual role as a family man and hitman. This project marks another chapter in his dynamic career.
The Jonathan Ross Show, where Dempsey shared these insights, airs Saturdays at 9:25 PM on ITV1 and ITVX, offering fans a glimpse into the life of the beloved actor.
