Saudi Arabia Railways to Transport Record 14 Million Passengers in 2025
In 2025, Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) achieved a significant milestone by transporting over 14 million passengers across the nation. This success represents a remarkable 7.1% increase from the previous year, facilitated by SAR’s operation of more than 45,000 trips.
Impact of Hajj on Passenger Numbers
A key contributor to the record passenger number was the nearly 2 million pilgrims who traveled during the Hajj season. Many of these travelers relied on the Haramain High-Speed Railway for their journey between the Holy Cities of Makkah and Madinah. This aspect underscores SAR’s crucial role in managing travel during peak religious periods and enhancing religious tourism.
Freight Operations
In addition to passenger services, SAR also operated a robust freight division, successfully transporting over 30 million tonnes of goods and minerals. This dual capacity strengthens SAR’s economic impact within the country.
Future Developments in Saudi Arabian Railways
Looking toward the future, SAR has announced an exciting project named “Dream of the Desert.” Set to be the kingdom’s first ultra-luxury train service, it is expected to begin operations in late 2026. This luxurious experience will offer one- and two-night journeys starting from Riyadh.

Enhancing Regional Connectivity
Saudi Arabia is also focused on improving regional rail connectivity. A new high-speed electric passenger railway is being developed to link Doha and Riyadh, slated for completion in 2031. This railway aims to reduce travel time to just two hours, with speeds expected to exceed 300 km/h. It will make stops in key cities like Dammam and Al-Hofuf.
Expansion of Gulf Rail Network
The broader Gulf region is witnessing significant rail advancements as well. The UAE plans to launch its Etihad Rail passenger service in 2026, initially connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Future expansions will extend throughout the seven emirates.
Saudi Arabian Railways’ record performance in 2025 lays a solid foundation for future growth. With continued enhancements in service offerings and regional connectivity, SAR is well-positioned to make a substantial impact on tourism and freight transportation in the coming years.
