Saudi Arabia Railways Transports Record 14 Million Passengers in 2025

In 2025, Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) achieved a milestone by transporting over 14 million passengers nationwide. This marked a significant 7.1% increase compared to the previous year, with the railway operating over 45,000 trips.

Impact of Hajj on Passenger Numbers

A noteworthy aspect of this record was the influx of nearly 2 million pilgrims. These travelers utilized the Haramain High-Speed Railway to journey between the Holy Cities of Makkah and Madinah during the Hajj season. This highlights SAR’s vital role in facilitating religious tourism and managing travel during peak periods.

Freight Operations

In addition to passenger services, SAR managed the transportation of more than 30 million tonnes of goods and minerals through its freight division.

Future Developments in Saudi Arabian Railways

Looking ahead, SAR announced plans in October 2025 to launch “Dream of the Desert,” the first ultra-luxury train service in the kingdom. This luxurious train aims to commence operations in late 2026, offering one- and two-night journeys from Riyadh.

Regional Connectivity Enhancements

Saudi Arabia is also enhancing regional rail connectivity with a new high-speed electric passenger railway linking Doha to Riyadh. Scheduled for completion in 2031, the railway is expected to reduce travel time to just two hours, with speeds exceeding 300 km/h and stops in cities like Dammam and Al-Hofuf.

Expansion of Gulf Rail Network

The broader Gulf region is also experiencing rail expansion, with the UAE set to unveil its Etihad Rail passenger service in 2026. Initial plans include connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with future expansions across all seven emirates.

Saudi Arabia Railways’ record performance in 2025 lays a strong foundation for future growth. By continuing to enhance its service offerings and improving regional connectivity, SAR is poised to significantly impact both tourism and freight transportation in the coming years.
