PTF names three for Billie Jean King Cup Juniors pre-qualifiers in Colombo

The Pakistan Tennis Federation has announced a compact three-player squad to contest the Billie Jean King Cup Juniors (U-16) Pre-Qualifying Event in Colombo from March 16–21, 2026 (ET). After trials held in the capital, Hajra Sohail, Zunaisha Noor and Romaisa Malik emerged as the federation’s choices for the international assignment.

Selection process and squad details

Trials were staged over two days at the national tennis complex in Islamabad on Feb. 14–15, 2026 (ET), when six contenders were invited to vie for places in the team. The final trio was chosen on the basis of match play, consistency, on-court discipline and recent national rankings. The selectors highlighted the trio’s tactical awareness and mental resilience during pressure moments as decisive factors in their selection.

Hajra Sohail brings a balanced baseline game and has shown steady improvement in national junior circuits. Zunaisha Noor impressed with aggressive court positioning and a reliable serve, while Romaisa Malik earned her spot with a string of disciplined returns and strong movement. The selected players will travel as a unit, supported by team officials from the federation.

What lies ahead in Colombo

The pre-qualifying event offers young players a chance to measure themselves against peers from across the region and to gain valuable international exposure ahead of larger continental competitions. The Colombo event runs March 16–21, 2026 (ET) and will feature teams competing for advancement to higher stages of the continental pathway.

For the Pakistani trio, the immediate aim will be to translate their recent domestic form into wins on foreign courts. Match preparation will focus on adapting to local conditions, scouting potential opponents, and sharpening doubles combinations—an area that often proves decisive in team formats. The federation plans to finalise logistical arrangements and a short training program before departure to ensure the players are match-ready.

Federation response and expectations

Federation leadership extended congratulations to the selected players and expressed optimism about their prospects. Officials emphasized the importance of these junior platforms for talent development and long-term growth of the sport in the country. There is a clear focus on building a pipeline of competitive players who can step up to senior events in coming years.

While the emphasis is on development rather than immediate results, the federation is hopeful for a strong showing in Colombo. Success at the pre-qualifying stage would provide a confidence boost and enhance the players’ exposure to international competition. Beyond results, officials stressed that the experience of competing abroad—managing travel, adapting to different courts and handling match-day pressure—will be invaluable for the young squad.

The selection closes a short but intense trial period and sets the stage for a busy month ahead as the players prepare to represent the country on the regional junior stage. With discipline, targeted preparation and the support of their federation, Hajra Sohail, Zunaisha Noor and Romaisa Malik will aim to make the most of the opportunity in Colombo.
