Kai Rooney Set for Man Utd Debut as JJ Gabriel Faces Ban
Kai Rooney, the promising son of former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, is gearing up for his debut with the senior team. The 16-year-old forward has made waves in the youth leagues and is now eligible to participate in the first team this season.
Kai Rooney: Rising Star at Manchester United
Kai Rooney recently showcased his skills by scoring four goals in an Under-16s match against Norwich City. This impressive performance helped secure a place in the Premier League Cup semi-finals with a final score of 6-4. Additionally, Rooney made his Under-18s debut last year, where he netted one goal in three games.
His Old Trafford debut came last month during an FA Youth Cup match against Derby County. Coming on as a substitute, he contributed to a 2-1 extra-time victory that propelled his team to the quarter-finals. Both his father and interim manager Michael Carrick were present to witness this milestone.
Eligibility and Future Prospects
Under Premier League regulations, players must be at least 15 years old when the season begins in August to qualify for first-team play. Since Kai turned 15 in November 2024, he meets this requirement. While his debut with the senior squad appears unlikely this season, his eligibility is a significant milestone.
Challenges for JJ Gabriel
In contrast, fellow academy prospect JJ Gabriel faces challenges in making his senior debut this season. Despite being hailed as Manchester United’s top academy talent, Gabriel, who is 15 years old, is not eligible due to league age restrictions.
Gabriel only turned 15 last October, meaning he was still 14 on the eligibility deadline of August 31. Consequently, he cannot make his senior league debut until the 2026/27 season. Gabriel did, however, participate in both FA Youth Cup wins this season, where he played alongside Rooney.

Although JJ Gabriel was able to play in the FA Cup, United’s journey ended early with a home loss to Brighton. In that match, fellow teenager Shea Lacey made his FA Cup debut but was sent off.
