Trio to Face Trial Next Year in Major Drug Bust
Three individuals are set to stand trial next year in a significant drug trafficking case involving fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine in Ontario. This marks one of the most substantial fentanyl seizures in the history of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
Details of the Upcoming Trial
Ontario Superior Court Justice Michael Varpio has confirmed that Richard Brewster, Leyla Ibrahim, and Tequar Jones will begin their trial over five days starting on September 27, 2027. The trio was involved in a joint police operation that seized illicit drugs exceeding $1 million from multiple cities, including Sault Ste. Marie.
Significant Drug Seizures
In January 2023, authorities seized approximately $470,000 worth of narcotics during searches in the 600 block of MacDonald Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie. This operation resulted in the confiscation of:
- 700 grams of fentanyl, a record for the local police.
- Stacks of cash totaling about $74,000.
- A stolen vehicle.
Additionally, following further search warrants in Oshawa and Whitby, police recovered another $620,000 in illicit drugs as part of Project Otter, a collaboration among Sault Police, Durham Regional Police, and Thunder Bay Police Service.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Initially, Brewster, Ibrahim, and Jones faced charges in the Ontario Court of Justice concerning their purported activities in drug trafficking and possession of over $5,000 in cash derived from crime. However, following their indictment in December 2023, these charges were elevated to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, which addresses the most serious criminal offenses in the province.
Accusations and Release Conditions
It is important to note that none of the accusations have been established in court; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Brewster, also known as hip-hop artist Richie Stacks, was granted bail in June 2024. However, following another arrest in October 2025 for violating release conditions, he was remanded in custody.
Potential Trial Witnesses
As the trial approaches, it is anticipated that up to 29 witnesses may testify, providing crucial evidence regarding this major drug bust. This case illustrates ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in Ontario.
