Apple Unveils iOS 26.3 Enhancements for Non-Apple Device Compatibility
Apple has recently launched the iOS 26.3 update, focusing on enhancements for non-Apple device compatibility. This update introduces key features such as notification forwarding and location privacy adjustments.
Notification Forwarding for iPhones
A significant addition in iOS 26.3 is the “notification forwarding” feature. This allows users to send notifications from their iPhones to third-party accessories, including devices running Google’s Android-based Wear OS. Once activated, users can select specific apps to forward notifications to their connected devices. This system resembles how notifications work on the Apple Watch.
It’s important to note that, as of the current beta version, notifications can only be forwarded to one device at a time. Therefore, if notifications are being sent to a third-party device, they cannot simultaneously appear on an Apple Watch.
Location Privacy Enhancements
Another notable enhancement is the “limit precise location” toggle, designed to improve user privacy. This feature is only available on a select few newer devices equipped with Apple’s C1 and C1X modems. The toggle reduces the precision of location data accessible to cellular networks, enhancing overall privacy.
Currently, the “limit precise location” option is available to a limited number of devices, including:
- iPhone Air
- iPhone 16e
- M5 iPad Pro
In the United States, Boost Mobile is currently the only carrier supporting this feature. Other popular models, such as the iPhone 17 series and devices with Qualcomm or Intel modems, do not support this privacy option.
Updates Across Other Operating Systems
In addition to iOS 26.3, Apple has also rolled out updates for its other major operating systems, including:
- macOS 26.3
- iPadOS 26.3
- watchOS 26.3
- tvOS 26.3
- visionOS 26.3
- HomePod software version 26.3
These updates mainly focus on bug fixes and performance improvements rather than introducing new features. However, beta testers have discovered preliminary support for Apple’s M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, indicating possible upcoming refreshes for higher-end Mac devices.
What to Expect with Future Updates
While the iOS 26.3 and related updates might seem relatively unexciting, the forthcoming iOS 26.4 release is anticipated to bring more significant changes. This includes the introduction of a “more intelligent Siri,” powered by Google’s Gemini language models.
This new Siri feature was initially expected in earlier updates but was postponed to ensure quality standards were met. Users can anticipate a preview of this feature through Apple’s developer and public beta programs before its official release across all devices.
