Three weeks are allotted for each train’s refurbishment process. During this time, Alstom aims to return one refurbished unit to CrossCountry weekly. The refurbishment phases include:

  • Week One: Complete strip down of the train.
  • Week Two: Painting the exterior.
  • Week Three: Installation of brand-new seating.

Enhanced Passenger Experience

The refurbishment focuses on upgrading both standard and first-class interiors. Passengers can expect new seating arrangements, tables, and carpets, all designed to elevate their travel experience. Other improvements include:

  • Upgraded CCTV coverage providing 360-degree views.
  • New power sockets, including USB-A and USB-C ports.
  • Enhanced toilet facilities and LED lighting.

Shiona Rolfe, Managing Director of CrossCountry, highlighted the importance of this refurbishment in enhancing passenger satisfaction. The project aims to standardize the quality of service across all 70 trains in the Voyager fleet over the next two years.

Environmental Considerations

Alstom is committed to sustainability throughout the refurbishment process. The company plans to recycle waste material generated during the upgrade. Additionally, local universities will benefit from reusable materials for educational projects.

The refurbishment of the Voyager trains not only aims to improve the passenger experience but also aligns with environmental sustainability goals. The new aesthetic will also feature a fresh livery, complementing upgrades to CrossCountry’s Turbostar fleet.
