Upcoming Waste Collection Changes in Waterloo Region

Upcoming Waste Collection Changes in Waterloo Region

The Waterloo Region is set to implement significant changes to its waste collection process starting March 3. These changes focus on garbage, organics, and recycling collection, aiming to optimize efficiency and service delivery.

Key Changes to Waste Collection

The new waste collection system will introduce zone-based pickups, replacing the previous municipality-specific approach. This shift is expected to enhance the organization of waste management services across the region.

Frequency of Collections

  • Garbage Collection: Remains bi-weekly.
  • Organics Collection: Green cart services will now be conducted weekly to encourage usage.
  • Yard Waste Program: Continues bi-weekly from spring through fall.
  • Bulky Item Collection: Will transition to a monthly schedule.

Olivia Kwok, the Director of Waste Management for the Region of Waterloo, emphasized the importance of these changes in ensuring efficient waste management. “Residents should check their new collection date online, as we will also be distributing a 2026 weekly collection calendar starting next week,” she advised.

Curbside Cart Distribution

To facilitate the transition to the new cart-based waste collection, over 350,000 curbside carts have been distributed to homes. The municipality is currently working on providing carts to eligible businesses in designated areas.

Free Exchange Policy

Residents unsure about the size of their carts have a six-month trial period. If the size proves unsuitable, a free exchange option will be available in the fall. For any discrepancies in cart size, residents can contact the region directly by email or through the Service First Contact Centre.

Recycling Collection Updates

Alongside changes in waste collection, revisions are also being made to recycling practices. As of March 3, recycling pickups through Circular Materials will shift to a bi-weekly schedule, alternating with the garbage collection.

Expanded Recycling Options

  • Circular Materials will now allow additional items in blue bins, including:
  • Coffee cups
  • Deodorant and toothpaste tubes
  • Black plastic containers
  • Frozen juice containers
  • Ice cream tubs

The full updated list of recyclable items can be found on the Circular Materials website. To ensure a smooth transition, residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new waste collection schedules and guidelines.
