Google Enhances Tools for Removing Personal Data from Search Results
On Safer Internet Day, Google announced significant updates for its tools aimed at enhancing online privacy. The improved features focus on the “Results about you” and initiatives for removing non-consensual explicit images from search results.
Enhanced Tools for Personal Data Removal
The “Results about you” tool has been upgraded to include options for removing more sensitive information. Previously, this tool allowed users to eliminate search results that contained phone numbers, email addresses, or home addresses. Now, it also allows users to request the removal of information such as:
- Driver’s licenses
- Passports
- Social Security numbers
To access this tool, users can open the Google app, click on their account photo, and select “Results about you.” New users will need to click “Get started,” enter personal contact information to monitor, and add government ID numbers. Existing users can also add their ID numbers and specify which ones they wish to monitor.
Monitoring and Notifications
Once users confirm their details, Google will monitor online search results for any new occurrences of the specified information. While removing information from search results does not erase it from the web entirely, it does provide an added layer of privacy.
Improved Non-Consensual Explicit Image Removal
In addition to the personal data removal tools, Google has streamlined the process for reporting non-consensual explicit images. Users can now simply click on the three dots next to an image, select “remove result,” and then indicate that the image is sexual in nature.
Furthermore, users can submit requests for multiple images using a single form, eliminating the need to report each image individually. All request statuses can be monitored in one location within the “Results about you” hub.
Proactive Filtering Measures
Google emphasized that removing content is just one part of enhancing user safety. To provide additional protection, users can opt to activate safeguards that filter out similar explicit content in future searches.
Currently, these updates are being rolled out in the United States, with plans to expand to additional regions. Google aims to provide comprehensive tools that not only aid in removing personal information but also work towards a safer online environment.
