Toronto Police Report Over $2 Million from Snow Route Parking Fines

Toronto has issued more than $2 million in parking fines related to infractions on snow routes following a significant snowstorm in January. The city’s parking enforcement officers reported issuing a total of 21,508 fines after declaring a Major Snowstorm Condition. This declaration aimed to facilitate snow plowing and removal on streets designated as snow routes.

Details on the Major Snowstorm Condition

On January 25, 2026, Toronto experienced nearly 60 centimeters of snowfall, prompting the declaration aimed at ensuring efficient snow removal. This state of emergency lasted until February 10 at 5 p.m. During this period, vehicles parked on designated snow routes or in areas marked with temporary orange “No Parking – Snow Removal” signs faced fines up to $500 and potential towing.

Fines and Enforcement Statistics

  • Total fines issued: 21,508
  • Total revenue from fines: $2,193,600
  • Tickets issued for snow removal infractions: 152

In addition to fines for parking on snow routes, officers issued numerous tickets for hindering snow removal efforts, particularly those obstructing streetcar passage.

Ongoing Snow Removal Operations

The city reported that almost 300,000 tonnes of snow have been hauled to designated storage sites since the snowstorms. Of this total, 240,000 tonnes were removed after the Major Snowstorm Condition was declared. These efforts are critical for improving access for emergency, transit, and residential vehicles.

City’s Response to Snow Clearing Needs

Mayor Olivia Chow has sought provincial assistance for clearing major routes, such as the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway. This action aims to enable city workers to concentrate on residential areas. The estimated cost for this contract could reach up to $950,000.

Implications for Drivers

Drivers are advised to avoid parking in areas marked with temporary “No Parking – Snow Removal” signs. Vehicles left in these spots may incur fines of $100 or be towed, directly impacting the effectiveness of snow removal operations. The city encourages residents to utilize off-street parking options whenever possible and to report areas needing attention by contacting 311.

Ongoing updates regarding snow clearance and parking regulations will continue to be monitored as the city strives to improve safety and accessibility across Toronto.
