2027 Toyota Highlander Debuts as Three-Row Electric SUV
The 2027 Toyota Highlander has made its debut as a fully electric three-row SUV, marking a significant evolution in Toyota’s lineup.
Introduction to the 2027 Toyota Highlander
This model represents the fifth generation of the Highlander, first launched in 2001. With this release, Toyota introduces an all-electric powertrain as standard equipment, setting a new precedent for its flagship SUV.
Trim Levels and Performance
In Canada, buyers can choose from three distinct trims: XLE, XLE Premium, and Limited. The XLE base model is available with either front-wheel drive (FWD) featuring a 77.0 kWh battery or all-wheel drive (AWD) with options for both a 77.0 kWh and a larger 95.8 kWh battery.
- XLE FWD: Delivers 221 horsepower and 198 lb-ft of torque.
- AWD Models: Produce a combined output of 338 horsepower and 323 lb-ft of torque.
Range and Charging Capabilities
The XLE AWD equipped with the 95.8 kWh battery boasts a remarkable range of 511 km, competing with models like the Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9. Other variants can achieve the following ranges:
- XLE Premium and Limited: 473 km
- XLE AWD with the smaller battery: 431 km
Charging is facilitated by a North American Charging Port (NACS), and Toyota states the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes under optimal conditions. Notably, the Highlander includes a battery preconditioning system for improved charging efficiency in cold weather.
Innovative Features
For camping and outdoor enthusiasts, the 2027 Highlander introduces vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology, allowing the vehicle to serve as a mobile power source. This feature is particularly beneficial during power outages or for tailgating events.
Every Highlander comes equipped with advanced safety and entertainment systems, including Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 and an upgraded multimedia system displayed on a 14-inch touchscreen. The digital instrument cluster measures 12.3 inches, enhancing driver visibility and interaction.
Interior and Comfort
The spacious interior can comfortably seat up to seven passengers, particularly when the optional bench seat is included. Standard features include heated front seats, with options for ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats. To maximize cargo capacity, the third row can be folded flat, offering up to 1,290 litres of storage space.
Availability and Production
The 2027 Toyota Highlander is set to launch this fall. It will join the ranks of the bZ series and C-HR, becoming the fourth electric vehicle in Toyota’s expanding lineup. Production will take place in Georgetown, Kentucky, with battery supplies sourced from a new assembly plant in Liberty, North Carolina.
A Subaru variant of the Highlander is anticipated to follow in 2026, expanding the brand’s offerings in the electric SUV market.
