Shane Bieber Starts Season on IL; Bowden Francis Set for Tommy John Surgery
The Toronto Blue Jays, the reigning American League champions, have delivered concerning updates regarding player injuries as Spring Training commences. Key pitcher Shane Bieber will begin the season on the 15-day injured list. This decision follows a cautious approach by the Blue Jays due to Bieber’s previous forearm fatigue, which he experienced during the playoffs and offseason.
Shane Bieber’s Injury Update
Manager John Schneider emphasized that the move to place Bieber on the injured list is primarily precautionary. Bieber, who had a challenging past season, dealt with forearm fatigue and underwent Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for most of 2023-24. Even though Bieber managed to pitch during the playoff stretch, he felt some elbow soreness last summer.
Last season, the right-hander logged 59 innings across both regular and postseason play. Although a specific timetable for his return is unclear, both Schneider and GM Ross Atkins remain optimistic about his potential contributions later in the season. Currently, Bieber has been throwing off flat ground, reaching distances up to 90 feet, indicating his road to recovery is underway.
Bowden Francis Set for Tommy John Surgery
In more troubling news, depth starter Bowden Francis is facing Tommy John surgery. According to Schneider, Francis had struggles last year, recording a 6.05 ERA in 14 appearances before going on the 60-day injured list due to a shoulder impingement in June. Unfortunately, this latest setback will keep Francis off the roster for the entire 2024 season.
Projected Starting Rotation
With Bieber and Francis sidelined, the Blue Jays will rely on their adjusted pitching rotation. Jose Berrios, who expressed dissatisfaction last season with his placement in the playoff rotation, is now expected to secure a position for Opening Day if he remains healthy.
- Dylan Cease
- Trey Yesavage
- Kevin Gausman
- Cody Ponce
- José Berríos
The loss of Francis adds depth concerns, particularly with righty Jake Bloss also recovering from an elbow procedure. Lefty Eric Lauer could assume a long-relief role but would be the preferred replacement in the rotation if another injury occurs.
Financial Implications and Future Moves
The Blue Jays are currently exceeding a franchise-record payroll estimate of over $310 million. Despite these setbacks, they remain interested in potential upgrades to their roster. The team previously explored options like Framber Valdez and may consider further moves to bolster their pitching staff to navigate the challenges ahead.
