Lake Tahoe Olympians Shine at Milano Cortina Olympic Games
Fourteen athletes linked to the Lake Tahoe and Mammoth regions are participating in the ongoing Milano Cortina Olympic Games, set to conclude on February 22. This year’s games feature a range of events highlighting the talents of these dedicated competitors.
Notable Medalists from Lake Tahoe
Eileen Gu, who trained at Northstar but competes for Team China, captured a silver medal in the freeski slopestyle event. This marks her second consecutive Olympic silver, having been narrowly surpassed by Switzerland’s Mathilde Gremaud, who won gold with a score of 86.96 points. Gu earned silver with a score of 86.58 and is also set to compete in the ski halfpipe and ski big air, where she previously claimed gold at the 2022 Beijing Games.
Event Results
- Bryce Bennett (Tahoe City; Team Palisades Tahoe): Bested his personal record with a 13th place finish in the downhill event, clocking in at 1 minute, 53.45 seconds. He ended 1.84 seconds behind gold medalist Franjo von Allmen from Switzerland.
- Keely Cashman (Team Palisades Tahoe): Alongside partner AJ Hurt, Cashman finished 15th in the Olympic debut of the ski team event, with a combined time of 2 minutes, 24.90 seconds.
- AJ Hurt (Carnelian Bay; Team Palisades Tahoe): Hurt performed admirably in the ski team event, securing the eighth position in the slalom portion. She is set to compete in the giant slalom and slalom events later in the Olympic schedule.
- Nina O’Brien (Team Palisades Tahoe): Paired with Bella Wright, O’Brien’s team was unfortunately eliminated when Wright did not finish the downhill run. O’Brien will participate in the giant slalom and slalom scheduled for later dates.
- James “JC” Schoonmaker (Lake Tahoe): In the cross-country sprint, Schoonmaker advanced to the semifinals but finished fourth in his semifinal heat, narrowly missing the finals. He is expected to compete in the cross-country 10K and team relays next week.
