Amitabh Bachchan Highlights Rajpal Yadav’s Challenges at Ata Pata Laapata Event

A decade-old moment of mutual respect has resurfaced as Amitabh Bachchan highlighted Rajpal Yadav’s challenges at the Ata Pata Laapata event. Their bond dates back to 2012 when Bachchan attended the music launch of Rajpal’s directorial debut.

Amitabh Bachchan’s Tribute to Rajpal Yadav

At the 2012 event, Amitabh Bachchan praised Rajpal Yadav for his resilience in the film industry. He expressed his honor in being invited by Rajpal and reflected on their past collaborations. This moment showcased not only their camaraderie but also Bachchan’s acknowledgment of Yadav’s dedication to his craft.

Rajpal Yadav’s Legal Challenges

Rajpal Yadav’s troubles began in 2010 after borrowing approximately Rs 5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. This loan was intended to fund his film, Ata Pata Laapata. Unfortunately, the film did not perform well, leading to significant financial difficulties for Yadav.

As the box office returns were dismal, Rajpal struggled to repay the loan. Over time, the outstanding debt grew to almost Rs 9 crore due to interest and penalties. In his attempt to resolve the issue, he issued several cheques that were ultimately dishonored, resulting in legal actions under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

  • 2010: Rajpal borrows Rs 5 crore.
  • 2018: Convicted of cheque bounce offenses, sentenced to six months in prison.
  • 2019: Conviction upheld by a sessions court.
  • 2024: High Court temporarily suspends his conviction.
  • February 2026: Directed to surrender to jail authorities.

Recent Court Developments

Despite several extensions to make payments, Rajpal Yadav struggled to comply with the repayment schedule. The court mandated that he pay Rs 1.35 crore across seven cases, yet he remained unable to fulfill these obligations.

By October 2025, he submitted demand drafts totaling Rs 1.5 crore, but the bulk of his debt remained unpaid. In June 2024, the High Court allowed for a temporary suspension of his conviction, conditional upon his efforts to mediate a settlement. Unfortunately, these attempts did not yield satisfactory results.

On February 2, 2026, the Delhi High Court ordered Yadav to surrender by February 4 due to his noncompliance with prior agreements. After appearing before the court on February 5, he proposed a new payment plan, which was ultimately rejected. Yadav then surrendered at Tihar Jail to begin serving his sentence.

Amitabh Bachchan’s recognition of Rajpal Yadav’s struggles highlights the complexities of the film industry and the personal challenges faced by its actors. As Yadav serves his time, the reflection on their earlier connection serves as a poignant reminder of the industry’s ups and downs.
