A former Clemson wide receiver has secured a new coaching position in the NFL. Seth Ryan has been named the passing game coordinator for the New York Jets, continuing a family legacy steeped in football.
Seth Ryan’s Family Legacy in Football
This new role for Seth marks a significant milestone in a lineage of coaching excellence. His father, Rex Ryan, served as the head coach of the Jets from 2009 to 2014 and is currently an analyst at ESPN. Additionally, his grandfather, the late Buddy Ryan, had a prominent NFL coaching career spanning 26 seasons, including his tenure as the defensive line coach for the Jets from 1968 to 1975.
Clemson Football Background
Seth Ryan played college football at Clemson from 2013 to 2016. He was part of the Tigers’ successful 2016 national championship team. Initially a walk-on, Seth earned a scholarship in January 2016. Throughout his college career, he participated in 33 games, serving mainly as the holder for placekicks.

Coaching Career
Before joining the Jets, Seth spent five seasons with the Detroit Lions. His roles included assistant wide receivers coach from 2021 to 2024 and assistant tight ends coach in 2025. Prior to his time in Detroit, he worked with the Los Angeles Chargers as an offensive quality control coach.
