MUN Launches Eight Exciting New Releases

Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) has initiated a comprehensive deferred maintenance plan spanning eight years. This strategy addresses over $500 million in critical infrastructure repairs and enhancements needed across the campus.

Financial Support for Deferred Maintenance

Recently, the government allocated $70 million in debt relief for MUN’s Core Science Building. This funding will significantly help reduce the backlog of deferred maintenance work the university faces.

Annual Funding from Campus Renewal Fee

In addition to government support, the university will receive $7.8 million annually from the Campus Renewal Fee. This amount will contribute to ongoing maintenance projects within the university.

Planned Projects and Upgrades

The Board of Regents at MUN has endorsed a program that includes various essential projects:

  • Demolition of Coughlan College.
  • Water-proofing and interior renovations of nearly one kilometer of academic tunnels.
  • Modernization of elevators.
  • Renovations to windows, brickwork, and doors.
  • Construction of a new primary data center.
  • Establishment of an emergency fund for unforeseen expenses.

Upcoming Construction Activities

Onsite preparations for the demolition of Coughlan College are scheduled to commence this month. Additionally, bids for the construction of the new primary data center will also close this month. Work on refurbishing MUN’s tunnel system is slated to start in the spring.

This multifaceted maintenance initiative reflects MUN’s commitment to improving its facilities and ensuring a safe and efficient learning environment for its students and staff.
