Google Expands ‘Results About You’ Tool to Include Social Security and IDs
Google has recently announced significant updates to its “Results About You” tool during Safer Internet Day. These enhancements expand the capabilities of a powerful resource designed to help users manage their online presence.
Expanded Features for Personal Data Removal
The “Results About You” feature now includes the ability to remove search results that contain sensitive information, such as:
- Phone numbers
- Email addresses
- Home addresses
- Government-issued IDs, including driver’s licenses, passports, and Social Security numbers
It’s important to note that while this action removes information from Google Search, it does not eliminate it from the web entirely. This process helps users maintain control over their personal information and safeguard their privacy.
How to Use the Tool
To utilize the expanded “Results About You” tool, users can:
- Visit the dedicated page at goo.gle/resultsaboutyou or access it via the Google app.
- Tap on their profile image to find the “Results About You” option.
- Add the information they wish to have removed.
Once a user’s information is detected, Google will send notifications, allowing them to ‘Request to remove’ that content.
New Features for Non-Consensual Explicit Images
In addition to personal data management, Google is enhancing its tool for removing non-consensual explicit images. This feature is now accessible through the Google Images interface by following these steps:
- Click the three-dot overflow menu.
- Select ‘Remove result’ and choose the option for explicit images.
Users can also now submit removal requests for multiple images simultaneously using a simplified form, streamlining the process.
Proactive Filters and Tracking
Google has introduced proactive filtering options that help users avoid future explicit results in similar searches. Furthermore, the “Results About You” tool now allows for centralized tracking of all removal requests, accompanied by email notifications providing updates on the status of those requests.
Availability
The updated tools are initially launching in the United States, with plans to reach additional countries in the future. As Google continues to prioritize user privacy and control over personal data, these updates signify a considerable step forward in internet safety and user empowerment.
