At the Milan Cortina Games in Italy, Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo secured his second consecutive victory in the cross-country sprint. This win marked his seventh Olympic gold medal, bringing him closer to the record for most golds in Winter Olympics history.

Klaebo’s Remarkable Performance

He executed a powerful final uphill sprint, leaving Ben Ogden of the United States in second place, 0.8 seconds behind. Norwegian competitor Oskar Opstad Vike took third place, finishing 6.8 seconds after Klaebo.

Swedish Women Sweep the Podium

The women’s competition showcased a fantastic performance by Swedish athletes. Linn Svahn led the race, narrowly defeating defending Olympic champion Jonna Sundling, with Maja Dahlqvist in third place. This achievement marked a historic Swedish sweep of the podium.

  • 1st Place: Linn Svahn
  • 2nd Place: Jonna Sundling
  • 3rd Place: Maja Dahlqvist

The event was attended by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, underscoring its national significance. Sundling expressed pride in her team: “I think I have the best team and the best teammates. It’s such a strong team, and we always push each other to be better.”

Ben Ogden’s Historic Medal

Ben Ogden’s performance earned the U.S. its first individual Olympic sprint medal in cross-country skiing. After the race, he acknowledged Klaebo’s dominance, stating, “It was Klaebo’s race to lose.” Ogden, overwhelmed with joy, emphasized his pride in his achievement.

Looking Ahead

Klaebo’s success continues to build his legacy within Winter Olympics history. With seven gold medals, he is just one shy of the record held by three athletes. Following his latest win, he reflected on the reduced pressure he felt compared to earlier in the Games: “My shape is good, and I was a little bit more relaxed before this race.”

As these athletes prepare for more competitions, their performances at the Milan Cortina Games have set high expectations for future events.
